Art 1 students investigated the elements and principles of design through class discussions about a variety of artworks. After defining the elements and principles on acetate, they taped it to chipboard as an overlay and then illustrated each one on the chipboard, using an object of their choice. Next, students sketched thumbnails to determine strong compositions which included two elements and two principles. The final design was sketched onto brown kraft paper and outlined in Sharpie. Students will finish their artworks by applying white highlights with tempera paint, color with Sharpies, and then add value and texture with Prismacolors. They will focus on utilizing design lines; rather than sketching, craftsmanship; incorporating elements and principles; and composition. I co-taught this learning segment with my mentor teacher, Kimberly Grant.
